Jewish gematria values

jewish gematria is a system of assigning numeric values to words, phrases and letters in the Jewish or Hebrew script. It is believed to have originated in the times of Moses and has been used throughout Jewish history as one form of interpretation of the Torah. Gematria has also been used to interpret other books such as the Talmud and Zohar.

The basis for this sophisticated numerical system is found in the ten Sefirot, or Emanations, of divinity. It is believed that each Sefirah contains some form of hidden mystical knowledge when represented numerically. The numerical equivalents for specific Hebrew letters are taken from kabbalistic teachings about how each aspect of creation can be traced to a particular source. For example, in Jewish gematria the letter Aleph corresponds to 1, Beth to 2 and so on. It is thus possible to arrive at a number which can be associated with a specific phrase or idea in Judaism.

Jewish gematria values can be computed in several ways. One method involves reducing larger numbers so they become smaller equivalents in Hebrew letters; this is known as "Gematria None" or "Gematria Concealed". Another method is called "Gematria Revealed" which consists adding up all of the numerical values contained within a sentence or passage although some prefer not to use it because it may reveal too much about the underlying meaning behind that statement or paragraph . A third method called "Thelema" utilizes both numerical reduction and addition; this produces results called "Shinui" numbers which represent hidden alternate interpretations for a particular set of words or phrases.
